Miss Dinks Tribute

“I’ve had the time of my life” these were the final words of the lovely Miss Dinks.

R.I.P

11th February 2011 to 12th September 2013

Video kindly put together by Brett

Right now I want to huddle in a crawl space with my family & grieve. But as Scott pointed out this morning her family was larger than just us. It definitely included all of you too. You all loved her as we did. You cheered on her successes, you laughed at her antics and you wept with her pain. This constitutes family and therefore we will share with you her departure from this plane.

Thursday morning started off like any other day. Me tip-toeing around the kitchen in the wee hours as not to disturb Miss Dinks. Gently changing her bedding, cuddling her & placing a little kiss on the top of her head. Putting wood on the fire to keep her warm and also highlight her shining and grateful eyes that would watch me go about my morning routine.

Scott would always say good-bye to her by scratching her neck & singing a little song he made up just for her. She would arch her neck to take in the full force of love that tickle was giving her.

Her appetite wasn’t the same at breakfast time. But that’s ok. We aren’t always hungry. So next it was a bath. She LOVED her baths. She loved the warm water lapping against her underbelly and the beautiful scented water that would perfume her feathers. I will never forget that smell as long as I live. I would breathe it in deeply whenever I nestled my face into her neck feathers.

We talked about how well her leg was healing. The bruising was fading, the swelling had gone down & I wondered when the stitches could come out…

Around lunchtime I could see she unable to get comfortable & she called out to me a few times. I moved her. I picked her up. I nursed her. Nothing would help. I phoned Scott and we decided to give her a small dose of painkillers. She was peaceful the rest of the day …… until 30 minutes prior to Scott’s usual arrival time home. Agitated I left everything how it was, wrapped her up & sat by the dam. The sun was setting and the water was rippling silver. She seemed to really enjoy the sun on her face, the cool breeze and the view that was hers.

When Scott arrived home it was ‘his shift’ to care for Miss Dinks as I went into town. It was 1600hrs and the decision was made that we both stay with her.

She acknowledged Scott …. she acknowledged us both and doing so we saw someone else’s eyes looking at us. Pure, black eyes. Eyes that longed to go home. We told her it was OK to leave. We understood. We love her. We will miss her. This will always be her home. We are her family no matter where she is. The pain was all too familiar as we voluntarily ripped parts of our soul out & gave them to her in the form of a golden thread. A thread that will forever bind us in time & space.

Knowing she was leaving we gave her some more pain killers and then held her for the next six hours as she drifted in and out of this existence and into the next. Like someone exiting a train with a lot of luggage. She had to keep returning to the train to collect more luggage, walk away with it, stack it & then repeat the scenario.

The only times she responded to our voices was when Scott sang his little song for her. She would raise her head as if to bring her ear closer to the sound. He was always her first love. I knew that. I didn’t care. There was always an abundance of love to go around.

At 2200hrs we all lay on the bed. Miss Dinks nestled between us being petted and loved. Having names to look for whispered to her. “Look for Abby, look for Lucy. Can you see Fern? Go with them. They know where to go”.

She drew in beautiful royal blues, purples and gold colours.

We heard her last breathe & we wept. Paralyzed with what to do next. After a while we lay her down in her bed. We placed her pillow under her head, tucked her in with her favourite green blankie & spent a moment each saying private farewells.

I awoke at 0030hrs as per usual. The tears were instantaneous. I don’t remember falling asleep again.

At 0400hrs I woke up crying. Scott held me. We held each other. One of our best friends was gone.

We carried her outside in a pink shroud to explain the sunrise and hoped she was seeing it with us.

My jumper smells of her. The fridge contains a lunchbox of her food. The clotheshorse has her linen drying on it. The pain of her departure is all around us. But Oh Lord what a wonderful time we had with her!

Last October she was given 7 days to live. She has accomplished a lot in these last 12 months. Look at what she has given to so many. Look at the connections she has interwoven by using social media. She flushed her extended family out of the woods and onto this page where she could talk to you all.

She has raised awareness and she has saved other hens through wanting to live so badly she took her Doctor to new levels of investigation and information.

An incredible life for a little hen. This is not the last we have heard from her. Her work will continue. She left suddenly. But we don’t like long good-byes either.

Thank you for sharing in her life and thank you for being her friend. All living creatures need friends.

(((hugs)))
Scott & Nikki xx

What an amazing ambassador for raising awareness of the cruel life of a battery farm hen. Ms Dinks’ work will continue long after her passing. So sorry for the loss of this light in your lives Nikki & Scott. You have shown her such amazing love in her time with you & I have loved hearing her stories & seeing her pictures. I missed meeting you in person by only a couple of days, but I felt as though I knew you already through your daily Facebook entries. You were a beautiful, strong and brave girl who refused to give in with the loving support of Nikki and Scott and of those in cyberspace. You touched many hearts which are much fuller for knowing you. You will be missed sweetie xxx

    • Nikki September 15, 2013 at 7:07 pm #

Thank you Linda. She fought until she could fight no more. It was not a ferocious fight, but one of humble dignity xx

Thank you so much for introducing us all to Miss Dinks. What a difference a little hen has made to so many. She brought joy to many with the daily updates you so generously shared. So much love…oh if only all her feathered relatives could know that love. But little Miss Dinks, started a chain reaction. She won hearts. She changed minds. And if a little red hen, who could no longer walk, could do so much, we must keep sharing her message, spread her story. My heart breaks for the emptiness you must feel, and at the same time I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do. xox

    • Nikki September 15, 2013 at 7:08 pm #

Thank you Coral. Thank you for the hand of friendship you extended to her xx

Dear Miss Dinks, Nikki and Scott,

Where do I start? Miss Dinks you had me enthralled the first time I saw you which was only a few months ago. I needed to know all about you and where you came from. I learned very quickly that you lived at Heaven on Earth. Nikki and Scott, you were generous with your love and time, and this generated love and warmth at the mention of Miss Dinks on your page. You can’t help but be compassionate when we all saw what you and your whole family did for Miss Dinks. Your dedication to Miss Dinks and all the animals is to be proud of, you are teaching us all lessons in love, life and loss…

I can’t wait to come and stay with you, I want to know what you’re all about and meet your family that you have introduced to us along the way.

Thinking of you all, especially you Miss Dinks, you have shown that it’s not the size of the animal, it’s the love in the heart that makes the world of difference. It’s with a heavy heart that I say farewell to you, but I have a strange feeling you’re not far away…

    Love you Miss Dinks,

    Carly

Dear Nikki, Scott and the rest of the family at Bed and Broccoli,

Miss Dinks was an inspiration to many. She had a bravery inside her that showed to many of us that even though the chips might be down, we continue to battle our way through with grace and courage. I loved seeing her updates, photos and videos. I have a photo of her on my desk at work that is a constant reminder of the fact that all animals are sentient beings with real feelings and personalities. Her message is still being communicated as people who stop by my desk ask about the photo of her.

I laughed at her antics and loved seeing her bright radiant face. She radiated warmth , kindness and gratitude. Be at peace little one in a new world where you can walk again, dust bathe and listen to 60’s music. One day you will meet all the B and B family again at the rainbow bridge where you can once again lie in the arms of your loving family

Thank you for looking after her and giving her the kindness and love she enjoyed.

Miss Dinks I loved you even though I never met you.

    Ben xox

Dear Miss Dinks – I also fell in love with your cheeky face, your exciting adventures, and then joined in sending you healing as your health declined. I checked in each day for updates on you, and shared them with my family. Thank you for raising such awareness for the plight of factory hens, and for showing how awesome life can be when you are free and loved so deeply. Rest in Peace knowing that the work you started will be continued, and your physical life had immense meaning to so many.
Nikki and Scott and also Dr Ben – thank you all for showing the love and care which all beings deserve.
And thank you so much for letting us into your lives – the good and not so good times.
    Many blessings
    Di xox

It was always a highlight to see a post about miss Dinks. Often I check my facebook on the phone but it is more a quick glance…….however when I saw a Miss Dinks post I always took the time to read it and like it and comment, mostly with a <3. Mainly because she radiated love and allowed all those who knew her to open that love within themselves. Through her relationship with Nikki and Scott and the journey she shared, she was able to help people find their compassion, when you speak from a place of love and a place of truth, people listen. Without question she enriched the lives of Scott and Nikki but beyond that she touched her doctors, the people she met and people throughout the world who knew her from social media. In a world that has somewhat lost its way, Dinks showed us what is truly important. Her love and her spirit will live long beyond the end of her Earth journey, an end that surprised us but one that was never going to be easy. I feel blessed to have been part of this journey and having seen the impact radiate into the world. All of us who knew of this story have had our spirits enriched and it is in these moments we become better people and in turn this allows us to create a better world. So thankyou Miss Dinks and thankyou Nikki and Scott for allowing this to be possible. I send all my love and healing to you in this time of great loss, no doubt Miss Dinks is not too far away, however the loss of those we love in Earth form is always difficult. Namaste

    • Nikki September 16, 2013 at 6:18 am #

Nicole -thank you for being her friend and thank you for listening & hearing her message. May it stay with you always xx

I never knew Miss Dinks personally, but I followed her story with many emotions…sadness, hope, joy, anxiousness…and may more. I came to know Miss Dinks at about the same time that my Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Some days seeing her smiling face posted on fb by B+B was just what I needed to get going and face a world that had become a pretty painful place. When she overcame this or that hurdle, it was a triumph, to think that not everything was so bad. When Dad passed away in November, it was a pretty hard time…but some days I could check in and see how Miss Dinks and her friends were doing, and that helped. The kindness of an animal helps to heal everything (even if that kindess is just a photo or a story told about them).

    Miss you xxx

    • Nikki September 16, 2013 at 6:20 am #

Thank you for sharing your story Kellie. It was wonderful to read how Miss Dinks, yet again, reached out & touched another person/friend. Reading all these comments has allowed me to see how busy she really was. Legs or no legs ….she moved about xx

My beloved Miss Dinks, in a short matter of time you captivated my heart. You taught me that your will to live was stronger than anything trying to bring you down. You taught me that love was your medicine.

I’m so happy you were among people who loved you with their heart and soul.

Your departure from this physical earth is painful to many, but I know that you are made new now and among loving friends.

    I love you so much.

    Dear Miss Dinks
You began your life living in a place of horrors as an egg laying hen.The pain and suffering you endured trapped in that living hell was shameful, heartbreaking and unesessary.
The heavens shone down on you one day and you ended up in a loving and caring home. Finall, you were around your kin. Humans that came from a place of love- just like you.
You opened up your wings and spread your love far and wide, reaching out through time and space. This is how you found me. Even though I never got to cuddle you or kiss your beautiful head, you stole my heart and kept it. You wrapped it around yours and gave me a piece of your soul. You gathered your tribe, wove your little golden threads and showed us pure unconditional love, gratitude, forgiveness, trust, courage, wisdom, friendship and joy.
This is the story of countless chickens still trapped in misery. Not all hens are as blessed as Miss Dinks.
Do not forget Miss Dinks legacy. To live kind. To spread the love and free all hens. Help to live ‘Dinkies Dream ‘
You were not just a little hen my beloved friend Miss Dinks, you are a beautiful, powerful being of love and light. You will remain forever in my heart <3 <3 <3

    Dear Beautiful Miss Dinks,
You were one amazing little chicken! the impact you had on thousands of people was something that nothing else could of done! The first time we met you, i was hoping Mike would go vegan and after he met you and all your friends at the broccoli, he did! I know you had a major impact on his decision! When we manned the stall at WVD 2012 the most common question we were asked ” How is Miss Dinks?” everyone wanted to know how you are and if you were recovering well! You were a star that made people react, think and change! I dont know many people that could have the same impact on the world as you did – proving animals are amazing!!
Im pretty sure the last few times we have been up your thoughts have been ‘ who is this drunken mad lady dancing her way around the house with my Nikki’ , sorry if i ever woke you up with my loudness! But most of all your story is one that touches peoples hearts and makes them think about the lifestyle they are leading and that the egg industry is not one that has no impact as many believe as eggs are a natural process – but one that strips chickens of their right to a safe and cruelty free life, demanding more of your body than it can bear! You are the chicken that has made me challenge my friends and family about their egg consumption and you are the chicken which will continue my promotion and dedication to a vegan lifestyle. When i heard you past away i cried, because of how special you are, that you had gone and for the farming methods that meant you had to fight so hard for the life you had. You are one amazing creature and will be missed by so many people! BUT it is not the end – you will be the reason thousands more turn to a compassionate lifestyle and be the drive of many more to continue their work.
    We love you Miss Dinks!
    Mel and Mike

I loved all the updates about Miss Dinks. I felt I knew her without even meeting her, and certainly loved her. I remember the tears that flowed on hearing of her being unwell, then again as she recovered. The pictures, the updates – she was so beautiful 🙂

Dear little girl, I am sorry the start of your life was so horrible. I am sorry that I ever ate eggs. I am although very happy that you had an amazing life with Nikki and Scott, and all of your friends. I had lots if smiles watching you, and wow, you had the best care in the whole wide world. I am also happy I am vegan, and that babies born in our family are vegans now. I am sad for your family, I hate the empty feeling I know they have. Thank you for being a little girl with big determination, and great taste in music. Lots of love from me, Carrie, and also Tess, and Meekah, and baby Matilda. PS. Matilda calls you Took Tooka, we have looked at all of your photos xxxx

Miss Dinks, you came into my life at a time when I needed to find clarity and purpose. You knew that I needed to know you and of you and what your blessings on this earth were for each and every other creature that you shared it with. What your blessing were for me. I felt as soon as I saw your little eyes looking out at me on this screen, that I had found a friend with so much love, empathy, caring, knowing and beauty . You touched my life for but a short time , a time that will remain deep in my heart and soul. Your strength of character and depth of love reached out to me across the miles and through the network. I have been enriched for having had this brief moment in time with you Miss Dinks.
I want to thank you from every cavern of my heart for enriching me, enlightening me, giving me strength to keep going with this dreaded depression I live with each day. I battle it on a daily basis, but when I met you I would come see your page and get so much good energy from you. I know that I still get that energy from you, as you were a healing soul to this whole planet and so many know this and have drawn on that love. Thank you so very much. I will continue to look to see you are there in little things that happen daily. I will never forget you , you will stay in my heart for the rest of my days.
Thank you so much to your family for sharing your love with us all, for allowing you to share your gifts with the rest of us. Thank you so much to them all, may love and light glitter in their lives forever.
Love always Miss Dinks, Helen (Spot ) Masters Christchurch New Zealand. xoxoxoxoxoxo

  43. Lisa September 16, 2013 at 7:53 pm #

I love you Miss Dinks, even though I never met you. Sometimes I would imagine sitting by the dam at the B&B with you in my lap reading you a book and giving you a pat. I have a cute silly little present here for you, I was planning to send it to you at Christmas time along with another CD to add to your collection.

Your life couldn’t be long, but at least it was happy and meaningful. You achieved more in your short time here than many people would in their long lifetimes. You were, you still are, an inspiration and a wonder.

You’re a amazing soul Miss Dinks and you will never be forgotten. Love you xoxo

    • Nikki September 16, 2013 at 8:17 pm #

Such a lovely message Lisa. I’m sure when you imagined sitting by the dam patting her she WAS on your lap! xx

    My Dear Little Dinkies,

Still hard to believe that you aren’t here with us, but I know that’s not entirely true….You are certainly with us in spirit, and, well you are kinda on me forever and ever!!! haha. It’s hard to put into words how you touched me Dinks….More so than a lot of humans. Your fight, your spirt, your courage, determination, your beautiful soul. I am so glad our paths crossed you taught me so much even if we did just meet a few times. I’ve never met anyone quite like you. I wish I got to pick you up and cuddle you one last time but thank you for visiting me in my dreams.
Love you forever and ever. Have fun on your travels!!

Darling Miss Dinks. You have been loved so much and still will continue to be. You showed many many people how wonderful your species is and drove forth a message of compassion. If you have saved just one little hen from a life of suffering then your work is done. You’re Mum and Dad will forever miss you as there are some voids that can never be filled, but love is eternal and that will forever bond you. We will all miss you and the world is a sadder little place without your physical body but we know beyond the stars you are still shining brightly and always will. Rest in Peace precious Angel. Dear Miss Dinks
Every time some one tells me that animals that are bred for food aren’t as loving and intelligent as our pets I tell them about you and about how you would insist on pats the very same way my dog does. Your life has been filled with more meaning than most humans and I will continue to tell all of the doubters about the wonderful lady you are. xoxo

    • Nikki September 17, 2013 at 8:26 pm #

She will appreciate that Rhiannon. Her work here was done when many received the message to talk about hens & their intelligence etc xx

  57. Patti September 17, 2013 at 7:59 pm #

One thing we all have in common is a little girl called Miss Dinks. Most of us have never met each other but we have a bond that will never be broken and a little hen is responsible to this. Not just a little hen but a little hen that had and has a message for us all. Miss Dinks told us that all animals want is to be treated with care and love just as we as humans do. No more, no less just the same. They feel pain just as we do. She brought us all together to make this world a better place because in her short life she did just that. She allowed us to see her at her best and her worst just so we can pass the word around that treating animals the way she was treated is not right and needs to stop. She just was such a special little hen that knew what she was on this earth for and did that job well. I for one will never ever forget her or what her human family did for her and still does for her friends. Miss Dinks you have inspired many people including myself and for that thank you. Love you Miss Dinks.

    • Nikki September 17, 2013 at 8:29 pm #

What a beautiful message. Thank you Patti! xx

  59. Joanne Anand September 18, 2013 at 12:42 pm #

Oh Miss Dinks. I’m sitting here crying over your passing. Tears for a little brown Hen I never even met. You touched so many people and somehow we could see how brave, strong and determined you were. You have opened up a lot of people’s eyes and taught so many to feel love and a strong connection to all creatures great and small and you have also through Nikki and Scott taught us all a lot about devotion and friendship. What humans do to Hens like you in big industry is more than abhorrent and much more than cruel. I hope somehow many can learn through you and your life’s journey about how better to treat Chickens and how they are friends, not food. Whenever I think of sunsets over a dam I will always think of you. So happy you’re no longer in pain and are free. Rest in Peace sweet Hen!

    Dear Nikki and Scot,

First of all our deepest condolences on your lose:-(

You guys have given all of us a new meaning of love, caring and family.

In our holy book, we read the stories of a mighty Prophet “Solomon” who was able to talk to animals and insects and they conmunicated with him. That was a God given gift to him being a Holy Prophet.

You guys earned this right by your sincere love and care for these creatures and I simply can not find proper words to admire you guys.

You guys have given us all a new outlook to look at nature and I can bet its a heavenly peaceful nature you guys have created!

Miss Dinks lived the life her kind can only dream and this makes her one of the luckiest ones and she will be looking at you guys with lots of smiles and appreciations from heavens for the special times you both have given her!

    • Nikki September 22, 2013 at 11:58 am #

They are such beautiful words Ali. Sending you & your family much love xx

  62. Kim Donaldson September 22, 2013 at 7:33 pm #

    Hi Nikki,

I read this again was thinking of you and Miss Dinks the tears flowed it made me so sad to think of her gone from this earth. I went to Mind Body soul workshop yesterday Adele Vegehead was there. We did a visualisation to see who my kitchen guide is funny my own winded angel Poppy who passed 6 weeks ago at 4 years old also 12 months after the PTS talk with the vet she was the first Kitchen guide. She used to love watching me cook, and getting her breakfast ready she would often come in the kitchen and sit down watching me, she died in my arms heartbreaking and a loss like no other I miss her so much.
You were also a kitchen guide for me thank you for the inspiration and tender moments we got to share with you and Miss Dinks.

    I hope you are ok

    In Peace

    • Nikki September 23, 2013 at 7:24 am #

It is wonderful to hear that our friends are still with us isn’t it Kim? Even though we know it …..it’s nice to hear the words.

Keep cooking your fear free food with Poppy for guidance & I will do the same here. Thank you xoxoxo

  63. Cheddar September 26, 2013 at 3:42 am #

I was so sorry to read about Miss Dink’s passing. My condolences to you both.

Even though I never met her, she taught us many lessons….

Miss Dinks was the little hen that could….. she could love and trust in spite of the horror she lived while a factory hen. She could let others love her in spite of the lack of love she had experienced herself. Her human family was more than she could ask for and you both can remember her for who she was… an ambassador for all the hens that suffer unspeakable abuse and cruelty every day around the world. She may not be with us physically, but her legacy will forever live in the lives of all she touched and the hearts she changed.

Thank you for always sharing her with the world. I sure miss the updates. Her passing is sad, and I cannot begin to understand the void you feel. Yet, her message of love will go on until peace and harmony has reached all the factory farmed animals.

Keep up the good work and be of good courage – you gave her the life most never get to experience.

    Peace.

    • Nikki September 26, 2013 at 8:32 am #

Such beautiful words to read first thing in the morning. Thank you! xoxo

Well Ms Dinks, I still cant find the right words. My heart aches and I feel a piece of me has gone with you. You have inspired so many. I have such a better understanding of veganism and the plight of factory farmed animals just from having known you. I always will remember you as my little hen that could. No more pain little darling. Love you shrimpy dinks xoxo. Nikki and Scott – I’m hoping you know I love you both! Thank you for all you do.

I love you beautiful being of love and light Miss Dinks♡♡♡

  66. Bonnie October 1, 2013 at 9:08 am #

    Dear Miss Dinks,

Your life was one of quite courage and tremendous love. A simple life.
And for you to have ‘landed’ with Nikki and Scott was a gift to all of us who came to look forward to the next update about you and your life.

It seems such a simple thing, following the exploits of a little hen living on the other side of the globe.
But, I suppose, to many people, a chicken seems a simple thing, too.
Those people will never know how much they miss.

I am so glad to be one of the fortunate ones who stumbled upon the BedandBroccoli page, and who was invited to share in your remarkable life.
I was so moved by the trust you placed in your humans, and how that trust was reciprocated with such devotion and care.

And in your graciousness, dear Hen, you included us in your surgery and, so movingly, in your journey to your next adventure.
You touched my heart and I know I will never forget you, nor the love you represent.
And I am SO happy that you are now free of pain and can help your humans with others who need your special touch.

    Thank you, Miss Dinks

I really loved hearing the daily updates of Miss Dinks’ journey, the happy times and the sad. I think more people need to learn that animals are living feeling beings who deserve to live their lives in peace and nature, not in fear packed into sheds and stalls only to be slaughtered (just for a few minutes on someone’s plate!). Your facebook blogging shows how they thrive when leaving in peace, but we also see how you thrive providing sanctuary and care for them. Thanks so much for what you do!

    • Nikki October 2, 2013 at 12:18 pm #

Lets hope more eyes are open to what you & I can see Jamie. Thank you every minute you spared a thought for Miss Dinks. She represented a lot of ladies xx

  71. Joanne October 4, 2013 at 11:05 pm #

    Miss Dinks!

I’ve written a comment on the Facebook post, but I’ll write it again (the feelings that are still coming from my heart!)

If I could describe you, it’d be a brilliant warm light, a piece of the loving sun that breathes life into everyone that it touches. Because that’s what you did and keep doing, radiating such love, bravery and beauty, you inspire and draw out those same qualities in those who know you. I wish I could’ve known you in “reality”, but your presence is such, that it transcends physical barriers such as distance and senses, I believe I did know when I listen to my heart.

You were my first hen love, showing me how your kind have and deserve dignity and freedom of expression and above all, love, which is so denied to your brothers and sisters. You are a reminder, we are all brothers and sisters only the physical, superficial differences separate us, if we let it.

Thank you so much for being you, and only you Miss Dinks. Thank you Nikki and Scott for being and sharing her story with us and all that you do.

    Much love,

    Joanne

I cannot explain fully the pain I am feeling tonight.
We only had her for 5 short months, but I’m sure to her that it was a wonderful lifetime after being rescued as an ex-battery hen.
    Rest in Peace girls.

I’m so sorry I haven’t written anything to you sooner Dinks. I couldn’t find the words to express how incredibly sad I am that you are no longer around to forage with me. You were the most amazing chicken that anyone could ever meet with the biggest friendliest personality (perhaps you were actually a cat in a chicken suit?). I learnt very quickly that if there was no corn to be had then my diamond rings were at risk of kidnapping for ransom. I’m sorry you never got to find the right fabric to pack that napsack and come visit me like we always threatened Nikki with. One day we will forage again, until then we will all fight for the freedom of your very extended family and all other families from slavery. I miss you x
